Berlin is an independent curator, author, and chef based outside of Tiohtià:Ke//Montréal. A Brooklyn transplant raised near Seattle, he is inspired by his German and Southern U.S. roots and an unabiding passion for culinary and agrarian traditions. Rooting into the language of gastronomy in 2009, Berlin began to establish himself by curating multi-dimensional pop-ups in artistic ecosystems from San Francisco to Brooklyn to Montreal - culminating in the 2013 publication of his memoir “The Ethical Butcher: How Thoughtful Eating Can Change Your World”. As a Gastro-Curator, Berlin focuses on creating spaces and opportunities for interactions between multiple disciplines without regard for conventional lines between curator and artist, or artist and artisan. Fascinated by Afro-futures ( AfroFuturism?) and decolonization, his work cross disciplinary work explores expressions of Black and Queer* identities, celebrating the brilliant ingenuity held in both cultures.
Berlin’s focus on collaborative installations with transdisciplinary artists takes advantage of the ability to infiltrate the viewer’s world through sensorial works. His first large-scale exhibition “Brown Butter: Succulent Artifacts of Black Creation” debuted in June 2022 at Agnes Etherington Art Centre. His current project “On Rupture” encompasses a year of experimental practice and collective projects in the interest of interrogating the independent curator’s role in dismantling oppressive norms within art institutions to clear space for a more challenging, engaging, and immersive artistic ecosystem.
