Transcontinental Divide grew from a collaboration between Gallery 101 and the Helen Pitt Gallery, Vancouver. The exhibition was conceptually based with 10 artists (5 from Vancouver and 5 from Ottawa) exchanging ideas to realize an exhibition in each other’s space. Two essays explore this collaboration, the catalogue also includes the artist’s instructions to each other. The exhibition was co-presented with The National Arts Centre’s British Columbia Scene.

Foreword by Vicky Chainey Gagnon and Leanne L’Hirondelle

The exhibition LORE, curated by Ryan Rice, features the work of artists Duane Linklater, Jason Lujan, and Tania Willard. The importance of this exhibition lies in the tracing of oral tradition as a living, changing entity that incorporates new elements such as video, written text and visual images. The work on view strongly represents, each in individual ways, practices that criticize, manipulate, and re-consider traditions of storytelling from a First Nations perspective. Through each artwork we better understand points of view that have been shaped by colonialism and cultural beliefs.

CATALOGUE LAUNCH: Friday, September 23 at 6pm

Unboxed: Engagements in Social Space, is a collection of critical essays about and by artists who work across the borders of art, architecture and performance. This collection is loosely based upon the lecture series that Gallery 101 and the Carleton University School of Architecture co-hosted throughout the fall and winter of 2002-2003. The goal of that series (entitled Unboxed: dialogues on art & architecture) was, in part, to engage both architecture students and practicing visual artists with this vital yet under-explored arena of interstitial practices. The anthology, which is an attempt to further broaden the audience for this work and thereby increase the number of potential participants, includes transcriptions of lectures by international artists: Vito Acconci, Lucy Orta, Jan-Erik Andersson and Marko Peljhan, as well as commissioned essays by Canadian artists: Ana Rewakowicz, Eduardo Aquino, Marie-Paule Macdonald, Jean-François Prost, Luc Lévesque, Steve Topping, and Adrian Blackwell.

Each text adds a unique and important mode of thinking about notions of space; directing us to consider the local and social connections between individuals and environments and, in their variety, they mirror the various ways we move in and around communities, rural and urban. Together, forming a challenging, engaging and accessible anthology that enlightens our way of seeing and our sense of being.

It provides rare and exceptional information on interdisciplinary practices for students in art and architecture departments everywhere. Its subject matter is highly theoretical as well as practical, accessible, and technical, and will be of immediate interest to the public in Canada and abroad.

The photographs of Greg Staats are concerned with what motivates the act of viewing as it moves into the time and space of the real, in search of an encounter. The image becomes the 'freezing' of this gesture; a small moment in a continuum, a brief ending barely captured in the image. This publication includes plates of images from Staats' Animose series along with the artists' biography and an original essay by François Dion.

Gallery 101's Resource Room is a sunny space on our second floor. Since 1999, it has hosted seven artists' projects based on various ideas of printed matter and archives. During the same period, the Resource Room itself has grown from a collection of old magazines and archives of 101's past projects, to a small but dynamic and jam-packed research centre for artists, curators, and students. The artists' Resource Room projects have been designed to complement the function of this space by challenging and reformulating ways of documenting, cataloguing, and preserving aspects of our culture, by playing with ideas of narrative, and by calling into question the traditional reception of art through the artists' use of innovative and often reproducible forms: from bookworks to posters to file-folders to CD-ROMSs. This book brings together all seven of the artists we've hosted, but it is not a catalogue of their past projects at 101. Instead, the artists have been re-invited to submit seven pages of new material that may or may not directly relate to their original Resource Room projects.

The trustworthiness of images and their interpretation, biography versus fiction; these are the questions that have concerned Gabriele Di Matteo since his earliest works. Starting with an “image trouvée” usually a portrait taken from a book, magazine or other printed publication - he then proceeds to 'translate' it into painted or photographic forms. His work is structured in sequences or series of variable length, each sequence based around portraits of famous people (Mozart, Machiavelli, Marconi, Boarges, Duchamp, Arafat) or completely anonymous individuals (the commercial demonstrator in Il Prestigiatore, identical twins, exhibition visitors...). Their portraits are enlarged, overlapped, or diversely treated through (flawed) repetition or successive photographic and visual variations, sometimes even delegating production of works to copysts, crafts-workers and computers. Under the false name of Armando della Vittoria, Gabriele Di Matteo has published a collection of imaginary biographies and directed eleven editions of E il Topo, a magazine produced in collaboration with a number of other artists. The present catalogue contains a wide range of illustrations showing the artist's work presented in chronological order. Different aspects are examined in the accompanying essays, underlining trans-historical and post-conceptual features and providing a portrait of a most singular contemporary artist.

Four photographers delineate myth and reality of Ottawa as Canada's national capital. The politics of such a small national capital tend to overshadow the individuals who live there, favouring an image that is closer to a monument than to a neighbourhood. This book shows the real relations of individuals to this place, beyond the picturesque Ottawa promoted in travel brochures. All four artists' images reveal contradictions surrounding the presence and absence of individuals and, by extension, the idea and the reality of the city. With photographic essays by Marlene Creates ("Looking at the City of Ottawa from Ten Places Outside the Municipal Boundaries"), Lorraine Gilbert ("Somerset Suite"), Jeffrey Thomas ("Scouting for Indians"), and David Dybiec ("Ceremonial Routes/Disconnected Visions"). With artist birographies.
