Meet Sergio Campusano, the president of the Diaguita Huascoaltinos, the Indigenous and Agricultural community in Northern Chile that is resisting the two largest gold mining companies in the world. Barrick Gold and Goldcorp – both based in Canada – seek to mine gold in the glacier-rich region in the High Andes, which has been the Diaguita's home since time immemorial.
The Diaguita's resistance is grounded in their way of life that is dependent on the land as well as their vision of development.
Learn about the Diaguita's struggle against these mining projects, which has taken this case to the Supreme Court of Chile as well as the International Commission on Human Rights. Hear stories of how the Diaguita Huascoaltinos resisted the Chilean state's attempt to extinguish their land title and how that is now being used to protect the last unpolluted valley in Northern Chile.
**This event is in lead up to the Permanent Tribunal on Canadian Mining, to be held in Montreal on May 29 - June 1. http://www.tppcanada.org/?lang=en **
