The project is based on the artist’ re-reading and re-presentation of a mid-1960’s comic book, Pasty & Hedy: Career Girls. The adventures of Pasty and Hedy – two young “career girls” in search of fund and good times –were originally created for a straight audience, but seen today, many individual frames reveal a strong lesbian subtext. Leaving the comic book’s original campy dialogue intact, Donna Quince has reproduced one of its particularly telling image as a giant, full-colour, wall-sized painting. The artist will continue to work on the painting, and on a matching black and white version, for the duration of her residency. As her work progresses, viewers are encouraged to contribute to an installation next to the paintings with their own mass-media and pop-culture clippings, images, photographs, and objects which contain a similar lesbian or queer reading. The installation will grow and change as viewers bring images, which contribute to the building of a queer “space” in the gallery, open to everyone.
