1-4pm at Gallery 101. The Michael J McGuire Mentorship Program fosters a student- to- student engagement between a visual arts student from the Richard Pfaff Alternate Program and a graduating student from the University of Ottawa Bachelor of Fine Arts Program. By connecting two students at different stages in their artistic development, the MJMMP facilitates an opportunity for personal and artistic growth for both. The program’s inaugural exhibition, “Interplay: Music and Steven Whiffen ft. Katie Wilde”, is launched in collaboration with Gallery 101, a non-profit artist-run centre in Ottawa, Ontario, dedicated to the professional presentation and circulation of visual and media art. The show includes work by both Steven Whiffen, the first MJMMP recipient, and his mentor Katie Wilde, emphasizing Whiffen’s latest production while providing insight into the collaborative nature of the program and Wilde’s emerging practice. Whiffen’s highly subjective worlds come from an interest in hiphop music and culture, which he describes as a way of life, rather than a sub-culture. Combining these with a newfound awareness of the more problematic aspects of cultural appropriation, Whiffen’s recent work presents a fusion of urban culture and imaginative representation. Wilde’s work is also featured in the exhibition. Engaging with the unknown, and extending across boundaries of science, pedagogy, and art, Wilde presents video documentation of “Non-Interference Patterns”, a performative and kinetic sculptural installation first exhibited at “Momentum”, the 2013 University of Ottawa Visual Arts Department graduating exhibition. The Michael J McGuire Program is honoured to have this opportunity to work in partnership with Gallery 101 and invite you to come celebrate our first successful graduate!
Gallery 101 is supported by our members, volunteers and supporters, The City of Ottawa, Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts.
