Timepiece is a new video installation by Montreal artist Gisèle Trudel. Her installation deals with the relationship of perception, movement and time to changes in the history of representation. Imaging conventions taken from the history of art are juxtaposed with images of women whose inner and outer physical reality is seen as the living symbol of the passage of time. The work is based on the principles of the nineteenth century stereoscope –which created a three-dimensional image from two specially prepared photographs. Instead of using static images, however, Gisèle Trudel has chosen to work with moving video images. Timepiece combines two state-of-the-art, digitally edited and synchronized videotapes played back on monitors with an apparatus of mirrors which produce a three-dimensional effect when viewed from the correct angle.
