Established in 2011, LALUN is a world music ensemble comprised of Liron Man (Israel/Spain) on hand pans and flamenco guitar, Lan Tung (Taiwan/Canada) on erhu (Chinese Violin) and vocals, and Jonathan Bernard (Canada) on percussion. With their unique instrumentation and hypnotic intercultural sound, this international ensemble presents original compositions and traditional music from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, coloured and influenced by its members’ roots in Chinese, Flamenco, Galician, and Jewish music.
Although fresh on the scene, Lalun's members bring over 50 years of professional musical experience to the stage, including performances at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (DC), Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ (Amsterdam), National Concert Hall (Taipei), National Arts Center (Ottawa), Place des Arts (Montreal), Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (Vancouver), and extensive international tours.
LAN TUNG uses traditional music as a bridge to connect between Asian and western ears, while experimenting with contradictions by taking culturally specific materials outside their context. Her rhythmic intricacy has a direct influence from Indian music, while her passionate melodies come from Flamenco and Central Asian music, and the sense of breath/space from Chinese music. Incorporating improvisation and graphic notations, Lan's compositions are released on numerous CDs, winning an Independent Music Awards and multiple nominations by the JUNOs, Canadian Independent Music Awards, and Western Canadian Music Awards. Lan is the artistic director of Sound of Dragon Society, Orchid Ensemble, and Proliferasian. Originally from Taiwan, she has studied graphic score with Barry Guy, improvisation with Mary Oliver, Hindustani music with Kala Ramnath, and Uyghur music with Abdukerim Osman. Lan has appeared as an erhu soloist with Orchestre Metropolitain (Montreal), Symphony Nova Scotia (Halifax), Atlas Ensemble (Amsterdam &Helsinki), and Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra (Taipei).
LIRON started taking piano lessons at the age of 4 and played the piano for 7 years. His first musical performance was at the age of 10 –when his first Piano Recital of classical music took place. Playing the piano, Liron also developed many different musical directions such as Jazz Tango, Traditional Music, Pop and more. At the age of 12, Liron discovered the electric guitar, and began performing at various events at the age of 14. During these years Liron played the guitar and participated in original musical ensembles of various styles such as Rock, Pop, Metal and Jazz.
From the beginning, Liron had a knack for composition and produced original music, he always felt a great passion for playing music and desired to improve his abilities. At the age of 18, when he had already appreciated and experienced various musical styles, he decided to try different instruments such as mandolin, bouzouki, clarinet, Ney flute and different percussion instruments. Through these instruments, Liron was exposed to new musical styles such as gypsy music from Eastern Europe, Oriental music, Bossa Nova, Samba, Klezmer music, reggae and various Fusion music styles.
Liron has always enjoyed discovering new musical styles and making the connections between them. It is evident in the richness of his performance repertoire. "Today I am particularly attracted to traditional music, folk and gypsy music, but the heavy metal vibes will never leave me."
In 2006, Liron bought his first hand pan drum and immediately felt a connection with the instrument and the ability to play it. Due to the lack of teachers who specialize in this unique new musical instrument, Liron developed his own style. Over the years, Liron has developed a clean, harmonious technique and influenced many other hand pan artists. His astounding speed and accuracy on the instrument has captivated audiences around the world.
