Khadija baker is a multi-disciplinary artist of Kurdish – Syrian descent living in Montreal. Her installations investigate social and political themes centered on the uncertainty of home as it relates to persecution, identity, displacement, and memory. These unsettled feelings of home are a part of her own experience. Through participative storytelling this artwork aims to create active spaces of participation to create empathy and understanding. Working professionally with sculptural/installation works and experimental storytelling she creates site-specific environments that offer multi-layered experiences. Through the creation of unusual listening patterns in her installations, viewers become active witnesses to stories of the displaced. Ms. Baker’s aim is to create a series of connections to emphasize insightful understanding and build up common relationships in a public space.
