    Opening
    • Friday, June 10, 2011 to Saturday, June 11, 2011
On Friday June 10th, SAW Video & Gallery 101 will launch Body Tracks, a group exhibition examining the art and life of Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. A prolific performance artist and filmmaker with strong feminist leanings, Mendieta rose to prominence in the mid-1970’s before her mysterious death in 1985. She often used the body as both a canvas and a paintbrush, her early work exploring blood rituals, crime scenes and physical abuse. Throughout her career, Mendieta’s work was grounded in the intrinsic connections of the natural world. Body Tracks combines one film by Mendieta with three works by contemporary Canadian video artists Jude Norris, Anna Peak and Philomène Longpré, alongside original ink drawings by Caro Caron from the biographical graphic novella “Who Is Ana Mendieta?”. The novella, as well as the exhibition catalogue, will be launched at a separate event on July 5th.
